Piers Kowalski is an average father of two with a not so average story. A gifted public speaker on a mission to change the world, Piers shares his powerful story of pain, self-discovery, fear, love, and hope to help others better understand the transgender experience, community, and humanity. After sharing his personal story, Piers invites the audience ask questions – extending openness to all, gratitude for the willingness to learn together, and grace for mistakes that are a part of learning and growth.
Born and raised in Colorado, Piers lived and worked on the west coast for 11 years before moving back to Colorado with his wife. He started building a career in his dream field of performance psychology, his wife went back to school for nursing, and they had two children. They seemed to be living a typical life. But at the age of 36, Piers was seven years, two kids, and two dogs into marriage when he discovered he was transgender. He was afraid he was going to lose everything and everyone he loved.
Starting with the time surrounding his life-changing discovery, Piers brings listeners along the rollercoaster of coming out to his wife, his parents, his children, his coworkers, and eventually the world. Then, meandering from the present back through his past, he shares stories from his childhood – moments he knew he wasn’t a girl, but didn’t have the language to understand or explain what he felt.
Vulnerable with a touch of humor and an eloquent yet casual style, Piers masterfully invites listeners into his story to feel their own humanity through his. There is a connection in this story for everyone: parents who love their children and children who seek the love and approval of their parents, spouses who vowed forever through good times and bad, and anyone who seeks to know themselves or to share their true self with the world.
