Bob Costas has been with NBC Sports since 1979. During this time he has covered every major sport, but is most identified with the Olympics and baseball. He anchored NBC's coverage of the last three Summer Olympics and hosted the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Costas has been involved in the coverage of six league championship series and five World Series for NBC Sports and he has hosted six Super Bowls. Bob was the play-by-play voice of the NBA on NBC from 1997 through the 1999-2000 seasons. His book, Fair Ball: A Fan's Case for Baseball made the New York Times Best-Sellers List. He went on to host his own late night program, the Emmy-Award winning "Later….with Bob Costas", which featured in-depth interviews exploring the lives of newsmakers, entertainers and personalities from varied backgrounds.
From presenting Baseball Game of the Week and Later with Bob Costas to hosting the Olympics, Bob Costas has been a part of every significant sport’s coverage over the past three decades. His thoughtful commentaries on a variety of issues have established him as one of his generation’s most distinctive voices.
Costas is the only person ever to have won Emmys in news, sports, and entertainment. He has won more than any other sports broadcaster, 26 Emmy Awards total. His versatility has been recognized with awards and nominations in the categories of play-by-play, writing, journalism, hosting, news and entertainment. He received his Emmy in news for his interview with Jerry Sandusky, the central figure in the Penn State scandal, and received his Emmy in entertainment for his acclaimed late night program Later with Bob Costas. Costas’s peers have named him National Sportscaster of the Year eight times and elected him to the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 2012. Bob Costas was also selected for the Walter Cronkite Award for distinction in journalism in 2012, becoming the only other sports broadcaster besides Al Michaels to be so honored.
Bob currently hosts Football Night in America on NBC and as well contributes to NBC News programs such as Nightly News, Rock Center, and The Today Show. He also continues to be the primetime host of NBC’s Olympic coverage. With the advent of the new NBC Sports Network, Costas’s program Costas Tonight reprises the issue-oriented town hall format that was such a successful part of his run at HBO. At MLBN, Costas has been able to return to his first love – baseball – contributing interviews, commentaries, and play by play to the new network.
