Martha Stewart was named one of "America's 25 Most Influential People" by Time Magazine in June 1996. She has earned two Emmy Awards for “Outstanding Service Show Host” (for the 1994–95 and 1996–97 broadcast seasons), and she earned an Edison Achievement Award from the American Marketing Association in March 1998. Martha was named “Publishing Executive of the Year” by Adweek in March 1996, and was a recipient of a 1996 Matrix Award in the magazine category, honoring her as an outstanding woman in the communications industry. Martha lectures across the country on behalf of numerous organizations, supporting charities including the national chapter of the March of Dimes and the Lupus Foundation.
Her namesake company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which she founded in 1996, reaches approximately 66 million consumers across all media platforms each month and has a growing retail presence with 8,500 products in thousands of retail locations. In addition, the company offers television and video programming, award-winning magazines, best-selling books, innovative websites and apps.
Raised in Nutley, New Jersey, in a family with six children, Martha developed her passion for cooking, gardening and homekeeping at an early age. Her mother taught her the basics of cooking, baking, canning, and sewing; her father introduced her to gardening at the age of three. Martha earned a bachelor’s degree in history and architectural history at Barnard College. Upon graduating, she became a stockbroker on Wall Street, where she gained her early business training. After moving to Westport, Connecticut, in 1972, she developed a catering business that showcased her remarkable talent and originality. Her unique visual presentation of food and the elegant recipes she created for her catered events were the basis for Entertaining, published in 1982. Entertaining was the first of 78 books, including bestsellers such as Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook, Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook and Martha Stewart’s Cooking School. The latter inspired the weekly television series, Martha Stewart’s Cooking School, on PBS. It is the latest addition to MSLO’s expansive portfolio of television programming, which over the years has been recognized with 18 Emmy Awards.
The Company’s merchandising offerings include the Martha Stewart Living line of home-improvement products at The Home Depot, the Martha Stewart Collection of home products at Macy’s, the Martha Stewart Home Office line with Avery at Staples, Martha Stewart Pets products at PetSmart, Martha Stewart Crafts at Michaels and Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores, Martha Stewart Clean with Hain, among others. MSLO entered into a strategic alliance with J.C. Penney Company, Inc., and launched products in jcp stores in Spring 2013.
